Optical Circuit Switch (OCS) technology is reaching a turning point of explosive growth. The latest industry forecasts indicate that by 2030, the total size of the global optical path switch market is expected to exceed $8 billion, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 30% between 2026 and 2030. This significant upward revision is primarily driven by the evolution of interconnect architectures for computing nodes within data centers, as optical technology shifts from traditional edge connectivity to core interconnects, opening up entirely new large-scale application scenarios.

The Global OCS Market Will Exceed $8 Billion by 2030

In previous stages of development, this type of optical switching equipment primarily served specific hyperscale computing clusters, handling large-scale data distribution between nodes. Over the next two to three years, these traditional hyperscale cluster applications will continue to dominate, and the industry’s supply chain model is undergoing a shift—research and development of related technologies is moving from an early phase of proprietary, closed-source development toward open, third-party commercial procurement.

At the same time, as the volume of data that each server must process has ballooned dramatically, horizontal scaling among computing units faces significant challenges posed by the transmission distance and power consumption limitations of traditional copper cables. To overcome this bottleneck, a new generation of ultra-large-scale architectures with high multi-rack density is beginning to integrate optical technology directly into server racks. For example, future hyperscale multi-rack integration solutions plan to extensively incorporate optical switching technology in large-scale networking, and large-scale commercial deployments are expected to roll out fully in the coming years.

The evolution of this technical architecture has had a profound impact on the entire optical communications industry chain. As market demand has become more diverse, an increasing number of innovative companies have begun to enter this field—particularly startups focused on silicon photonics—bringing new vitality and customized solutions to the industry chain.

In terms of hardware architecture, the large-scale deployment of optical path switching is reshaping the demand for optical transceivers within data centers. Compared to traditional parallel fiber transmission solutions, single-fiber transmission standards and new optical multi-chip interconnect standards offer significant advantages. At the same time, customized technical solutions—such as those designed to accommodate more complex network topologies, higher optical power budgets, and optical ring devices that support bidirectional transmission—are emerging as key development directions in the construction of next-generation data center infrastructure.
