In order to realize the high expectations for 5G wireless deployment, the transition of the wired access network to 5.5G technology is necessary.

The 5.5G plan aims to increase the speed of wireless broadband connections and wired broadband connections by 5 times to 10 times. The deployment of 5G wireless systems has not significantly improved the speed of mobile services. In order to realize the high expectations for 5G wireless deployment, the transition of the wired access network to 5.5G technology is necessary.

50G PON is the key technology of 5.5G
The wired part of the 5.5G plan (called F5.5G, or Fixed 5.5G) is based on 50G PON technology developed by Huawei, which is five times faster than 10G PON. At this stage, 10G PON is being deployed, and it can provide 1Gbps FTTx service at present, and can provide 2Gbps FTTx service in the future. The goal of F5.5G is to achieve "everywhere" 10Gbps connection through 50G PON.

A legitimate question is whether 10Gbps is needed everywhere, with industrial automation being brought up as an area that could definitely benefit from higher speed connections. For example, automated optical inspection (Automated Optical Inspection, AOI) for production quality control can be realized through 50G PON. Since a single ultra-high-resolution camera requires a 7Gbps connection, a high-speed PON is required. Supporting multiple cameras, continuously streaming data can also be a challenge for burst-mode PON systems.

10G PON deployments have started with commercial customers, but widespread adoption of the technology has only started after upgrades in consumer connectivity (FTTH) over the past two years. By the end of 2022, there will be 120 million 1Gbps FTTH customers, including 102 million in China. Service providers have deployed more than 25 million 10G PON OLT ports globally, including more than 15 million in China.

Subscriber adoption of 1Gbps FTTH is still in its early stages, accounting for less than 10% of the 1.4 billion wired broadband customers. Service providers in North America and Europe are just beginning to widely deploy 10G PON or NG-PON2 technology. However, many of them have already started planning next-generation technologies, using IEEE 25G/50G EPON and ITU-T 50G PON. In fact, ITU-T 25G, 50G PON has been supported by major operators in China, Europe, the Middle East and elsewhere.
