Optical devices are optoelectronic components used in optical communication that perform various functions based on the photoelectric conversion effect.

Depending on whether photoelectric conversion occurs during operation, optical devices can be divided into active devices and passive devices.
Active devices require external energy to drive their work. They are primarily used to convert electrical signals into optical signals, or vice versa, converting optical signals into electrical signals. At the same time, it is also the heart of the optical transmission system.
Passive devices do not require external energy to drive. It is mainly used for light transmission, distribution, connection, etc. At the same time, it is also a key component of the optical communication system.

What are optical devices and their classification and applications?

Optical devices can be further divided into the following categories according to their functions:
▶ Transmitting and receiving devices: including optical modulators, optical transmitting devices, optical receiving devices, etc. It is mainly used to ensure the accuracy of electrical-optical signal conversion and improve transmission efficiency.

▶ Wavelength division multiplexing devices: such as arrayed waveguide gratings, optical filters, etc., used for filtering, peak adjustment and integration of optical signals. ‌ Gain amplifier devices ‌: such as optical fiber amplifiers, optical isolators, etc., used to optimize the transmission quality of optical signals. ‌ ‌Switch exchange devices‌: such as optical switches, optical cross connectors, etc., responsible for the isolation, filtering and connection of optical signals.

System management devices‌: such as optical performance monitoring management devices, dispersion compensators, etc., used to comprehensively detect and maintain the optical signal transmission process.

The application fields of optical devices are very wide, mainly including:
Communication‌: Optical devices are a key component of optical fiber communication technology. It is used to achieve high-speed, large-bandwidth, and low-loss data transmission.
‌Medical‌: Optical sensing technology is used for highly sensitive in vivo detection.
Energy‌: Improve the efficiency of solar cells and increase power generation.
Environment‌: Used for air pollution monitoring, air and water quality analysis, etc.
